Sonepur Mela held in a small Bihar village of Sonepur (Sonpur) is one of Asia’s largest cattle fairs. Nearly all animals can be bought – all breeds of dogs, camels, buffaloes, cows, goats, horses, birds and poultry. However, the area that attracts the biggest crowd is the one where elephants are lined up for sale. They are often beautifully decorated for the purpose of sale and the mela is the only one where such a large number of elephants is displayed and sold.
