Kolkata, India

Kolkata is the first Indian city I have ever visited. That’s where I started there my first trip to India in June 2004. These were very early days of my photography. I spent a week walking the streets of the city and taking photos of all this excitement I was surrounded by. Everything was new, fresh and fascinating. I have never seen so much life in the streets before. I left the city with loads of new photos, I was very proud of them. I went to Varanasi, my other dream city. After spending a week there I was heading to Agra. Unfortunately all my equipment was stolen at the railway station in Varanasi, together with all the photos I had taken. I left India heartbroken, but not I knew I had to try again. A few months later I was back, but to another part of India. This time it was a success. I brought all the photos back home. My second visit to Kolkata was in 2007 and since then I have been back a countless number of times, each time amazed by the energy of this city.
This gallery is a mix of street photography and other photos taken between 2007 and 2018. It is my impossible attempt to convey the spirit of Kolkata. The way I see it, the way I feel it.
The gallery is still being developed, as I have not finished going through my archives. I am also planning more visits to this incredible city again. One day I am hoping to be able to publish a Kolkata photo book.
