NEWS June 13 - July 5 - I conduct my first photography workshop in India for one participant - Twan Rutten from the Netherlands. We travel together for 3 weeks, take pictures, discuss photography and ways of working. June 2010 - Amateur Photographer magazine publishes a 5-page feature about my work on Cardiff nights: see it on flickr June 2010 - I am awarded a PhD degree in Computer Science by the University of Glamorgan in Wales. June 2010 - I win an award in BZWBK 2010 press photo competition in Poland. From the press release: "Third Floor Gallery is run by photographers Joni Karanka and Maciej Dakowicz. Located in a period building a stone's throw away from Cardiff's bustling waterfront and the Millenium Centre, Third Floor Gallery shows the most exciting national and international contemporary photography." We are opening on the 12.02.2010 showing "LoveUK" by Peter Dench. our FACEBOOK page December 2009 - I win the 3rd place in the Digital Camera Photographer of The Year 2009 competition in "This is Britain" Category. Additionally, one of my photos was Highly Commended and another Commended. The competition attracted over 100,000 entries. Photo Awards 2009, The Grand Prix award. There was a ceremony on the 15th of October in Warsaw, in Teatr Wielki (The Grand Theatre) - photos from that event. There was an exhibition of the winning photos in Teatr Wielki until the 15th of Nov 2009. Viva! is the most popular Polish celebrity magazine, with a run of around 500.000. After graduating in 2000 from university in Poland with a Master degree in Computer Science I moved to Hong Kong where I stayed for almost 4 years working at Hong Kong Polytechnic University. In Hong Kong I bought my first camera and found out that such a thing as photography exists. Then in the end of 2004 I moved to Cardiff to work at University of Glamorgan as a Research Assistant and pursue a PhD in Computing. I left the univeristy in January 2009 and I have been working as a photographer since then, in the meantime completing my PhD studies in January 2010. Recently, together with Joni Karanka I have opened a photography gallery in Cardiff, called Third Floor Gallery. I have worked on various projects home and abroad, travelling to more than 20 countries in Europe, Asia and Africa. My main interests are social issues, humanitarian aid and development, travel, but most of all it is street photography. I have cooperated with various international NGOs and organizations. My photos have been published in various magazines and newspapers around the world. Recently my "Cardiff at Night" story was published in major British newspapers and other media around the world and it was discussed on the national British TV and radio.
